The Nunchaku form is required for Third Degree Black Bet in Five Animal Kenpo and is the variable nature of the weapon makes this kata quite challenging.
This form will enhance the nunchaku handling skills of the student. The three handling methods of the nunchaku are used in combination throughout the form (clubbing, vicing, and flailing.) As a club the nunchaku is used to strike at short range and to defend. The leopard and tiger will often employ this use of the weapon. Vicing is primarily a constrictor snake use of the weapon by generating deadly compression using the cord/chain of the weapon and the handles as two points of opposing counter leverage. The flailing aspect is usually leopard style with fast strikes and rapid and unpredictable changes in direction. However, when holding at the end of the hand for maximum range the crane is used. Even the Dragon strategies are shown application with this weapon.
Combining diverse handling skills and striking angles this form unifies the nunchaku to the student's footwork and stance changes. Although illegal as a weapon in many states and country (most have provisions allowing the Nunchaku for tradition martial arts training however), the principles learned in this kata apply to any centrifugal weapon that is easy to find in your environment: A belt, a computer mouse or keyboard, or a small desk lamp and cord.
Filming Schedule and Details:
Filming is scheduled to begin Sat. Sept. 3, 2011. The filming will be done in professional digital video and sound (just like our Nunchaku and Knife Techniques DVD) and will be filmed at our new studio in North Chattanooga, Tennessee. Sijo Trevor Haines will be demonstrating the form and giving application examples and will be assisted by his youngest son, Jacob Haines, who is a 1st Degree Black Belt in Five Animal Kenpo and is making his video debut on these final two installments of the 20 DVD series. DVD packaging and artwork has already been designed (matches the Nunchaku Technique and Knife Technique DVDs) and editing and DVD authoring is projected to be completed by mid September. DVDs will be duplicated locally in Chattanooga, TN by Wholesale Tape and Supply. We anticipate the DVD will be ready to ship by the end of September!
